Code P0016, timing belt?

My car recently shut off. We looked at the codes and it gave code p0342. We took it to a mechanic shop they said it was missing teeth on the timing belt. They replaced it and now it works and drives but it gives code p0016. I took it back and they said that if it was the timing belt then it wouldn't be running or driving. We keep telling them we think it's misaligned, does that sound right?

Hi,

The code indicates there is an excessive variance between the camshaft position sensor (CMP) and the crankshaft position sensor (CKP). If the deviation between CKPS and CMPS is bigger than the threshold value, PCM sets DTC P0016.

To answer your question, yes, if the timing is a tooth-off, it could cause this. However, please understand there are other things. For example, if one of the sensors is faulty, there is an oil path that is clogged, and so on can cause the code. See pic below.

I attached a pic below showing the possible causes.

Other than the code, how does the engine run? Is it smooth or does it have a rough idle and other drivability issues?

Thank you for that! It runs perfectly fine. I wouldn't even know that it was throwing a severe code if it wasn't for it showing the code. I was able to drive it back to the mechanic shop and everything.

If it is running properly and there is no power loss, chances are it is a connector issue. Is the shop planning to check things for you?

So, we took it to another shop, and they retimed it and replaced a coil. But the light is still popping up. I'm going to take it back tomorrow and ask them to check the connector.

Sounds like a plan. Something isn't adding up or we are missing something very simple. I don't recall you indicating this was an issue prior to the original repairs, so if it isn't the belt, chances are a wire is damaged.

Let me know what is found. I'm really curious at this point.

It wasn't an issue but when we brought the car back to the mechanic shop, they had the car shaking. I guess they took out a coil. We went to a second shop that's where they retimed it and replaced the coil. We took it back because the light came on they replaced the crankshaft sensor and oil control valve. Still nothing. Can you explain what exactly to tell them about connector issues? Because at this point it seems like they are guessing.

As far as the connections are concerned, they need to be tight, free of corrosion and undamaged. I attached the possible causes (since we know the belt is correct).

Ask if they checked any of the things listed. Also, if they need diagnostic steps, let me know and I'll get them for you.

So, after taking it to the third shop, which was the dealership, they finally figured out the problem, which was it needed a new cam phaser and the code finally went off.
