Setting base timing I took Distributor out.I took number one spark plug off. Then plug the hole for spark plug.Turned engine over until the one piston was on top.Inserted the distributor made sure the rotor tip was facing number one piston.Had to rotate the rod on top of oil pump right just a little to get rotor to face number one piston.Once it was correct I installed the distributor cap.Tighten the distributor making Sure enough to rotate to set timing.checked the firing order was correct.Turn the engine and it started but backfiring.Rpm going up and down.Turned the car off started real quick backfiring until it smooth out a little when it warmed up enough I unplugged the est wire.set the timing to 600 according to the Manuel. Then turned off and plugged est wire back up.And removed neg.cable to remove bad code waited thirty seconds or more.Reconnected.started car.Car started but once I put it in drive it turned off. Rpm gauge moves up and down. Please help.

check the wires leading to pickup coil they may be bad some did that . also is coil above cap check little plug that connects to rotor may be broken. you just need to pull ecm fuse to have engine light reset as well instead of battery. check fuel pressure with a gauge as well auto parts rent it. shold be 41-47 psi.
