Got in my wife's van and heard a rock from the engine. Any clue what it could be?

Hi,

Wow, I certainly hear it. Can you tell where it seems loudest? For example, is it louder at the front of the engine or the rear? Is it louder from the top or bottom of the engine?

Has anything ever been done with the timing chain and tensioners?

Also, try removing the serpentine belt and see if the sound goes away. It may be a belt-driven accessory.

Let me know.

Nothing has ever been done with the chain or tensioner. We replaced the water pump and 20,000 miles ago.

Seems to be coming from here.

I'll try to listen from different spots tomorrow and see if my son will remove the serpentine belt.

Try that and see if the sound goes away. Also, I'm struggling to see what you circled. Am I looking at the belt area?

Another thought came to mind that can cause a ticking and that's a leaking exhaust manifold or oxygen sensor. See if it seems to come from that area.

Let me know.

I believe it's the water pump. Looking at the video it seems that the pulley of the pump under load is wobbling. I hypothesize, with the help of my son, the three mechanics that installed the water pump two years ago over toughened and the heating went out. We will be pulling the belt tomorrow to check on that.

Hi,

Thanks for the update. If you have a chance, let me know if that is the cause. I'm interested in knowing.

Take care,

Joe
