The engine is knocking and our mechanic states the engine is gone and will need to be replaced. Trying to find a salvage engine to put in it. Will an Elantra engine work (2.0L)?

I have no idea if the engine fits but here are some guide lines for you to check if it is workable.

Basically engine are defined by codes and not capacity so to know if it is interchangeable, you need to know if the engine code is the same.

Even if the codes are similar, does not necessarily mean it would be a good fit.

Others thing to check are whether the control system used is similar, sensor locations should not be out of original position.

External components have to be reused if they are not the same.

Engine can be repaired no matter what is wrong, only the cost and some cases human factor.
