Temperature/starting problems

My car will shut off immediately after you start it, but starts right up on the second try. It doesn't do this every time but does it often. It started about a month ago and did it occasionally, now more frequent. It also heats up halfway at idle, not sure if that has anything to do with it. When I had the check engine light scanned it said ect sensor.
