I have 1998 Suzuki sidekick with 55K mile, 4x4, with front manual hubs. When I put it into a 4-wheel drive, the front transmission/drive axle makes clicking noise like CV joints. I thought it was a hub problem. I locked the hubs individually without engaging 4-wheel drive, they do not make the noise when I drive around. The noise occurs only when the 4-wheel drive is engaged (with/without hub engaged). I check the rubber boots around the front axle but I didn’t notice any cuts/breaks. Could this noise be due to inner/outer CD joints problem?

Outer CV joints will click when bad when you make turns, but the boots are usually torn when this happens. If it only happens when in four wheel drive, I suspect a problem in the hubs.
