My 1993 Subaru Legacy LS, AWD, 2.2L engine, auto trans, 134,000 miles, gas gauge goes from almost 1/2 full to dead empty, and will stay there, sometimes for 1-2 days. Can I sanely replace the sender or whatever, or is it too much trouble to work with?

I noticed the "elder" in your handle, if that's true I would leave it alone! A lot depends on if you live in a rust belt state? This will get ugly with a 93 in that region. If you are in a good climate, use up most of the gas or siphon it out, leave about a gallon. Remove the lines, Drop the tank, remove the spanner nut, pull out the tank unit and replace! Easy eh?
