I have the mechanics puzzled, can anyone help! 1998 Subaru legacy, 5 speed has been overheating. Blowing coolant out. We replaced thermostat, flushed rad, the dye test was negative for gasket problems, what shold I test for next. THe mechanic said that it could be the onset of a blown gasket and the dye test can't catch it yet? ANy ideas!

Check and see if the water pump is circulating the coolant. Check for loose belt. You say the rad was flushed, was the engine flushed out without the thermastat in?

Sounds like a possible headgasket issue if it is a legacy GT with the 2.5l I would say that it is a good possibility.I would inspect the overfow bottle for any signs of oil residue and an exhaust smell. Probably not the awnswer you are looking for but its a very common problem for the 96 to 99 2.5l suby
