My car died last night on a dark country road. No sputter, no warning. It was not in excellent running condition before, but was RUNNING. Gas was low, put more gas in, fuel pump turns on, battery is fine. Motor turns over but wont fire. Just replaced all spark plugs, dist cap/wires/rotor and fuel filter (all after it died) If I hear the fuel pump hum when I turn the key could it still be toast. I don't really want to buy a new one for $300 if its not the issue. Thanks for your help.

The pump still could be bad, have a pressure test done on it and it should tell you weather or not its a bad pump or what.

Do you have spark on all cylinders?

Not sure if I do. What is the best way to check that? Are you hinting at timing problems? I think that is my next step, I cringe to think about a snapped timing chain. Thanks for your input. :(
