I own a 2000 Subaru Legacy L AWD sedan. The mileage is a little over 100,000 (which is nothing for a Subaru). I owned another Subaru before that I had over 300,000 miles on it. Here is the problem I'm experiencing with this one though.

My car has an automatic transmission and sometimes when I take it out of park and put it in drive, the transmission doesn't catch. It will shift into reverse without a problem. I have to keep putting it back into park, then drive until I feel it shift. Could you give me a list of things to check, starting with the least expensive? I'm really hoping that it's not a major issue because I do not have the funds for a rebuilt/new transmission.

Thank you so much for your time.

Do you have a check engine light and when was the last transmission service?

Check the transmission fluid level and condition if okay -test the throttle position and vehicle speed sensors continues to do it-get the transmission checked out-

The check engine light does not come on when it does this.

I checked the fluid level and it was just a tiny bit low, not very much at all. But I did add some and drove the car home. I haven't driven it since I brought it home, so I'm not for sure if my car is just sensitive if the fluid is not exact. If it continues to do, I will check the other things you told me to.

Thanks.
