My question is this.....I had a problem when backing up..the rear wheels grab and make the car jerk a little. I took it to our family mechanic and was had the rear differential checked, the tires and finally had a fuse changed that disengauged the all wheel drive. He told me that took care of the problem and that it was ok to do. So, my question is is this really the case can an all wheel drive system be switched to a two wheel drive without a long term problem.

it will do harm if left like that for a while. what did you mechanic say about the emergency brake. most subarus have two brakes in the back. one disc and one pad. the pad is for the e brake and disc for stopping. Have him check the e brake shoes to see if one became loose and is hanging up when you put torque when going in reverse. this may not be the problem but that is where I would start.
