I have a 94 legacy wagon with 86k miles on it. It started overheating, so I took it in, and the mechanic says it's the water pump. So, he says while they're in there replacing the pump, he suggests the following additional repairs be done: Timing belt (even though it was done about 25k miles ago) tension belt, cam seals, thermostat, and crank seals. He quoted $1000 to do all this work. I do know that the cam seals are leaking, so that a no brainer. But I'm just wondering if all the other things he suggests are necessary, and if $1000 is a good price. The alternative is to just do the water pump / timing belt for $650, which seams reasonable, but I'm not sure that the additional items should carry an additional $450 price tag. Any thoughts?

It makes perfect sense to replace these items while the engine is taken apart that far anyway. The price tag seems very steep. But that could vary on your location. Check with your local dealer to see what it would cost. In the very least if the price tag is the same, you have the piece of mind that the dealer installs OEM genuine Subaru parts.
