Noises problem
1996 Subaru Impreza 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 216K miles

I had already donated when I originally became a member but was unable to find my unsername and pswd info to log in so I had to re-register as a new member. The issue was a noise in the steering column. The answer to your previous questions about changing speeds or when she applied her brakes is no. It is rhymic, and steady. It is intermittent. The noise can best be described as a clunking or thumping sound that sounds as if it is something going around like a baloon on a tire hitting up against a fender would make. It is under the steering column. The car does not have to be moving for it to start. It will also do it if you switch the ignition to accessories. It does it sometimes at startup, car in park, it starts sometimes after the car has been running for sometime. Sometimes it stops on its own, and other times it continues until my daughter reaches her destination. It does not do it all the time. I detect no transference from her transaxle or her steering box, it is coming from under and inside her steering column. You said this would be a good one. Any ideas?

To help me better understand noise only is present while engine is running? You said in accessory it makes noise assume engine is not running?

Correct, engine does not have to be running for noise to begin. With the ignition in accessory, it can begin, or when you start the egine, it begins, and sometimes will shut off on its own and sometimes will continue until engine is shut off. Bottom line is engine does not have to be on. A steady almost rthymic clunk, clunk, clunk. It looks like I may have to pony up that $90 diagnostice fee the dealer charges. I simply don't want to get up under that dash and fool around under the steering column unless I have an idea of what I am looking for. Do you know of anything located inside a steering column that turns on an axis or eccentric that would make a steady clunking sound like this? Closest I can come to describing the sound is as if you placed a towel around the head of a hammer, and beat lightly on a table top, in a steady beat. Weird. I hope you have some idea because I don't have a clue.

Maybe a relay nothing in collum that moves on it's own. Only thing possible is a relay. Pull off any panels under collum and give a listen and see if you can find source of noise.

Thanks. I really wasn't that worried about a sound like that, but you never know. A $10 investment to find the possible answer if cheaper than the $90 they wanted at the dealer to diagnose. Thanls again. I'll probably be a regular on this site. Her car has over 216K on it and even though it was serviced regularly at the dealer, and well taken care of, it will eventually need some major work, but if she can get another 30K out of it, before the tranny goes, she can buy another car.
Thanks again for the input.
