When the wheels are slipping, as on a muddy hill, the RPM's drop to 1000, sometimes taking even 1 second to even respond. They may shoot up to 2500 RPM's, not enough to maintain speed. This is even as car is floored. As a result, forward motion stops and it's all she wrote. I've had subarus exclusively except for 2 years since 1985 and this has never been an issue. As a result, I can't go up our 4 wheel drive road successfully very often. Is it a new thing with these Subarus or is there a problem?

Check and test the following below:

Oygen Sensor
Catalytic Converter
Dirty fuel injectors (cleaning the injectors often fixes this).
Bad MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor
Bad TPS (throttle position) sensor
Bad or dirty MAF (mass airflow) sensor
Low fuel pressure (leaky fuel pressure regulator or weak fuel pump)
Vacuum leaks (intake manifold, vacuum hoses, throttle body, EGR valve)
Bad gasoline (fuel contaminated with water or too much alcohol)

Sometimes, what feels like a hesitation is actually ignition misfire rather than lean misfire. The causes of ignition misfire may include:

Dirty or worn spark plugs
Bad plug wires
Weak ignition coil
Wet plug wires
Cap and Rotor

Note:If it doesn't apply,disregard.
