Sometimes when warming up a pinging or knocking sound is heard from engine untill warm-up is complete.

Suspect a faulty lifter, whats happening is when you turn the car off and it sets a while a bad lifter is letting the oil run out of it instaed of keeping it in the lifter. When the oil drains out of the lifter and you start the vehicle the lifter makes a knocking noise until oil gets back in the lifter and lubricates it

I have had a similar problem and it turned out to be the knock sensor I have a 2000 suburu so you might want to check that
