Purchased this vehicle in November 2015. It burned oil but did not leak oil. Shortly after, gas smell in car when driving and at stop lights. Then spark plug blew while driving.

Using a ton of oil, replaced one catalytic converter and now have to replace the second one.

Head gaskets do not appear to be leaking, but it burns a ton of oil.

What is happening?

Do a leak down test for failed compression rings, this is a better test than a compression test, but if you do not have the equipment to do a leak down, do a compression test wet and dry. This will give you a fair indication as to the condition of the rings. Also, when running, remove the oil filler cap if it has a lot of back pressure due to blow by, this is also a good indication that the rings are suspect.
