I researched and found out the vehicle radio wiring harness has the E6 pin to be the steering wheel controls. The wiring harnesses they sell don't have that pin. Can I take the Key 1 or Key 2 or SW1 or SW2 wire and butt connected to the wire in the E6 pin on the vehicle radio harness to make the steering wheel controls function?

Hello,

First, you'll need to make sure the vehicle has the proper clock spring installed to support the steering wheel controls. After that, you'll need to connect the circuit from the E6 terminal at the radio to the Light Green circuit at the bottom(column side) of the clock spring. Make sure you have battery voltage on the yellow wire at this same location with the key in ACC or Run. Beyond that, make sure the steering wheel control harness is plugged into the connector on the top side of the clock spring.

See the attached wiring diagram.

So the steering wheel control wiring is not embedded in the factory harness. And what is the clock spring and what does it look like?

Yes, the steering wheel radio control circuits would be included in the factory harness if the vehicle was originally equipped with that feature. I apologize, based on your original description, I was led to believe you were trying to modify an existing vehicle to make this feature work. Did your vehicle come equipped with the switches from the factory? If so, all the wiring should already be in place. Assuming the switches are not working, have you checked the light green wire in the diagram above to make sure it's intact?

The clock spring is the circular bundle of wires in the steering column that connects all the components in the steering wheel to the rest of the vehicle.

The steering wheel controls work well. Since I'm replacing the factory radio with an updated radio, I just wanted to know how to make the steering wheel controls work. I have a key1 and key2 wires in the after market radio harness which I probably have to hard wire to the factory interface harness of the radio.

I would consult the installation guide for your aftermarket radio and see what the purpose of these two key circuits are. I've installed quite a few radios over the years and most don't have any direct provisions for integrations with factory steering wheel controls. Most car manufacturers use different control strategies in this regard, so it's next to impossible for an aftermarket radio manufacturer to provide a one size fits all solution that works with every potential installation scenario. You may want to consider contacting their customer service or technical support departments for additional assistance.
