I am going to replace the non-telescoping steering column with one that telescopes.
I know exactly how to do this but it will entail removing and reinstalling the clock spring. If I buy a new clock spring it will come with a plastic immobilizing stop that pulls out after installation. I don't need to buy a new clock spring. I want to keep the clock spring I have because there is nothing wrong with it. How can I remove it and maintain it in a fixed position during the removal and reinstallation? Can I buy an immobilizing plastic insert like the kind that comes with a new clock spring or can I improvise and cut out and shape a piece of plastic and tape it in the hole to achieve immobility?

Good evening,

The new one does come with a plastic lock to prevent it from turning too much.

I attached a picture of it for you to view. Dorman makes the clock spring and you can get it at any parts store or Rock Auto.

Hello Roy,

I know I can buy a whole new one from Dorman. I want to use my existent one and want to just buy just the plastic lock for it. Can I do so?
If you read my email carefully I said " I don't need to buy a new clock spring. I want to keep the clock spring I have because there is nothing wrong with it. The plastic piece is not available by itself. It is only available with the clock spring.

You can try to make one.
