Starts up, then dies.

2004 Ford Escape, 131,000 miles. No prior problems, and then this morning out of nowhere the car vrooms to a start when I turn the key but then dies within a second. If I give it gas it stays alive indefinitely, but the second I take my foot off the gas, it dies within a second. I tried cleaning the mass airflow sensor, but that didn't change anything.

First I would check fuel pressure.

The idle air control may have failed and cannot be cleaned.

You cannot clean the mass air flow. If it is reading wrong, it must be replaced
