Starts but wont go when put into gear

I was driving and I heard a pop then my vehicle would not go when put in gear! What is wrong with it? To me it appears to be a slight whining from the transfer case. I just do not know where to start? Please tell me it is not the transmission!

If you do not see something like a driveshaft hanging down and engine still runs then it has to be something with a transfer case or transmission. Have a transmission professional take a peek at it.
