New battery now having issues with it starting or staying running?

Somebody rear ended while it was parked, I can out try to start dash gauges went crazy and would not start, put in new battery. And now having issues with it starting or staying running, before that hit car was awesome now garage says alternator and they want $1,900.00. How can a hit blow my alternator?

I would check the alternator output myself by using this guide and it is normal for the car to stall after installing a new battery. Please check out these two guides and get back to me:
