At the end of summer 2022, I was having issues with my car not turning on. I would put it in the 'on' position to charge it, and then crank after 10-15 seconds, and nothing would happen. I took it in to my mechanic and they said I needed a new starter. I paid and went on my way. 3-4 months later, the same issue was happening where the car wouldn't crank, and I took it back in. They replaced the starter again, and then a few weeks later, the car was still having the same issue. It also began sometimes making a strange screeching sound when I tried to crank. I took the car back in, left it with the mechanics for over a week and half, but they couldn't get the car to make the same sound. At this point, it was cranking for them.
I took the car back, then traveling to see my parents 3 hours away, when the cranking and screeching began happening more frequently. At this point, it sometimes takes 4-5 times to crank the car for it to finally turn over. The screeching goes in and out based on each crank.

I got a second opinion, and they said it might be the flywheel wearing down, and something with the starter not fitting into the flywheel properly, so it's not spinning as it should. They'd have to take out the transmission to access, and since this is well over a $1k job, they wouldn't advise until the car actually breaks down. I love this car but am in quite a pickle not knowing what to do about it all.

When you say it takes 4 or 5 times before it turns over, can you hear the starter trying to turn the car over or a clicking sound? To replace the flywheel the transmission would have to be taken out, but before you do that check the wires that connect to the starter. They are quick to connect and sometimes can come loose, especially by the CV joint to make sure the wires are not rubbing.

I don't hear a clicking sound, but the screeching sound does feel as though the car is trying to turn over. I added a video here so you can hear the sound.
As far as I'm aware, the wires are fine, but how would I check this? Or would I need a mechanic to check? Thanks in advance!

I listened to the video a couple of times. What it sounds like is that the starter is not engaging all the way. Were you able to see the starter they took out the first time? If so, how do the teeth on the starter look like they were worn down? Your post said that after they replaced the starter it worked all right for a couple of months or so. Try this, turn the car on and try to start it just for a second and see if you can hear the starter engage. Just for a second on and off with the key. Let me know what you hear.

I just tried turning the car on as it was cold through the night. I let it charge in the on position like usual for about 8-10 seconds, and for the first time, it turned on no problem, yet there was a slight clapping noise right in the beginning. I got this on video, attached below. The second time, it made the screeching noise but I didn't get this on video by accident. Then tried it 3 times after that, no screeching - turned over - but still heard the same clapping noise in the beginning.
Also I didn't see the two older starter's, so not sure if it was the teeth being worn down.

It is something to note, that the car turns-over perfectly sometimes, and other's not, as if the teeth aren't catching every time. I noticed a trend with the screeching happening more when I would drive around time doing multiple short trips. Longer trips like on the highway and then stopping for gas didn't have an issue.

Just for my information could you have the battery checked? With short trips sometimes a weak battery will not recharge completely. You said that on long trips it works okay.

Checked the battery, it's reading 12 volts, measured at 12.51 exactly.

I have heard that a low battery would energize the starter but not enough to turn the engine over. With it starting ok at times my thought is something with the starter is loose or rubbing. I cannot rule out the flywheel but really don't think it is the problem. Take it back to the garage and have them just let them check it out.

You're welcome, let me know what you find out if you take it to the garage and have it checked.

Hi Mike! After leaving my car at the mechanic for a bit, their best guess is an issue with the ignition lock cylinder. I had mentioned something to them that was important - and missed the note here: When I crank the car (position marked 'III' on my ignition key area) the key won't click into place, and I have to turn it back to position 'II' in order for the screeching to stop. They want to replace the part and see if that'll fix the screeching. Since this discovery, I've also noticed that when I let the car charge in the 'II' position for a few seconds, and then press in more firmly when cranking, the screeching almost never happens, and I've been doing multiple short trips lately. I'm hoping with this replacement, this'll be the end of the issues, but we'll see and I'll keep you updated! They mentioned if this replacement doesn't work, they'd recommend replacing the fly wheel, as it has some wear but not enough to cause this much issues.

Has the started been checked, have it done before you go into the expense of replacing the flywheel. It could very well be the ignition switch going bad. Or the starter is getting weak. You said the flywheel does not look that bad and are there any teeth that look worn down? Let me know what they find with the ignition switch.

Mike

Coming back here with an update! Myself and the mechanics were thinking it was the ignition lock cylinder that needed replaced, but after they examined the car more, they believed it was actually the wear on the flywheel. They estimated me for a $1400 job for R&R Transmission, replacing the torque converter. They said the car will turn on, probably continue to until the fly wheel is completely worn down, but I'll still run into the screeching and not-turning-over issue occasionally. At this point, it only happens a few times a week, and I'm not in the financial position to put that much money into a job. My plan is to use the care for however much longer and then once it won't turn on anymore, get a new car.
