Starter issues

I was able to Uninstall the starter from my vehicle. I installed the new starter. Didn't bolted down yet just added one bolt but very loosely and connected the sensor and battery. Everything else like the mass airflow sensor, and all vacuum lines are still off the vehicle. Turn it on and it stays on for only 2 seconds and goes off. Left it like that all day long and came home just now in the evening and it turned and stayed on. When I turned it off to restarted, it didn't start. Is it because everything is out of the vehicle and the starter is not clamped down correctly to the torque specifications?

Hi,

If you have everything disconnected, that certainly can cause the engine to stall. As far as the starter, if you are starting it while only one bolt is loosely installed, be careful. It can break the starter or where it's mounted. There is a lot of torque on it when cranking the engine.

I attached the directions below for the removal and replacement of the starter. I'm adding them just in case. Also, they provide the torque specifications.

For future reference. How would you test a starter to see if it works before assembling the vehicle back together?

Hi,

When trying to determine if the problem is related to the starter or other component, you will need a helper.

On the starter, there will be a heavy gauge wire direct from the battery. That will always have 12v. There is also a smaller trigger wire on the S terminal. That wire has no power until the key is in the start position. Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for voltage at that wire.

If there is power, the starter is likely bad. Here is a link that explains it in more detail:
