I went to start my car, the engine cranks and the car records 600rpm but won't start. When I turn the key to do this the wire from the solenoid keeps catching fire. Occasionally this doesn't happen and the car starts and runs fine. I can bump start the car and it runs fine. Is this a starter that needs replacing or maybe something bigger. Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes the starter needs replacing. The resistance in the solenoid is too high causing the excessive heat.
