When I open the gas cap while the engine is on, there is a sputtering sound, and the RPMs drop, and the car shuts off. When I turn off the ignition and restart the car, it stalls, and I have to restart it a second time. There was a check engine which gave a code for Mass Air Flow sensor, so I replaced that, but the car still hesitates to turn on and shuts off when I put gas.

It sounds like the EVAP purge valve is stuck on. Here is the location so you can check it out. Remove the valve and try to blow through it, if you can the valve is bad and needs to be replaced. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.
