Need some help on this.

car listed above 2.0T 6 speed Tiptronic automatic

Had a “shudder” or “Shake” when shifting into reverse or drive during idle. This only happens when the car is cold and goes away when warm. No codes showing up at all. Totally stumped. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi,

Since you feel this when it's placed in gear, I would start by checking for engine mounts. Additionally, I would suggest checking if there are vacuum leak.

First, check if there are leaks. Here is a link that explains how it's done:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-an-engine-vacuum-gauge

Also, inspect the motor mounts for worn or dried rubber grommets.

Let me know what you find, additionally, let me know if you have access to a live data scanner.

Joe

Hello, I wasnt able to find any vacuum leaks. I do have a small oil leak but wasn’t able to pinpoint where it was coming from. But now I do know that one of my engine mounts are a little worn. But that shouldn’t cause me to stall right? I do have a live data scanner (OBDEleven).

Hi,

No, that wouldn't cause a stall. Since this isn't an issue when the engine is warm, it is not likely to be an issue with the idle control.

Do me a favor. Since you have a live data scan tool, try this. Before starting the engine cold in the morning, hook up the scan tool and see what the engine coolant temperature is signaling to the PCM. The temperature should be really close to the ambient temperature. If it is off, that can cause an issue like this.

Next, after driving it and the engine reaches operating temperature, check the short-term fuel trims. Let me know what they are. This will tell me if there is too much or too little fuel getting to the engine.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe

Here is the live data, I threw in some extra things in there that are air/fuel related. For some reason I only had the option for long term fuel trims, not sure why. Hopefully this can give you an idea.

Coolant temperature was kind of close, the temperature outside was around 20F and it read 32F for the coolant temperature.

Here’s another video, showing me starting the car for the first time, reversing off of my driveway, idling in reverse on the road and then at the very end I shift to drive. You can see on my boost gauge how it’s fluctuating badly. Seems like I might have a vacuum leak? But I'm not sure what it would be?

This is also only when the engine is cold and sitting overnight.
