Hi, there is grease leaking out of my rear shock on the passenger side. When I hit a pot hole, or go over a bump in the road it shimmies/shakes and bounces in the rear. Please help.
Thank you, Dolores

Hi Deekiser,

Shocks leak when they fail. There is a seal around the rod and piston and when they get old, they leak an oil that picks up dirt that turns into a grease look alike. The oil that leaked out is what keeps the vehicle from bouncing. The oil is what dampens the shock from bumps and when that leaks out, the only thing there to absorb any shock is the spring and that does not absorb anything well because it is a spring.

I attached the process to replace them but that is the only solution.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks

This is a common failure. The solution is to replace both rear shock absorbers so they're a matched pair. Here's a link to an article that shows how to do the job:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-shock-absorber

The shock absorber in this article uses a threaded stud on top. Ford uses a different attaching method that is considerably more difficult to remove. They use a rubber bushing on top, similar to the one on the bottom, then a metal bar goes through it, and two bolts go through that bar, with nuts over the top of the mounting plate. Those nuts are really hard to reach and hold a wrench on. Many mechanics use a torch to cut those bolts off to save time. The photo shows that strap and how the two bolts go through it.
