I pulled into my driveway and all of a sudden, the transmission would shift into park. I almost have the shifter assembly completely out, because I noticed the shifter interlock is pretty broken. However, I know the problem with that would be more so for getting the shifter out of park. So, with that being said, I imagine I need to either replace or adjust my shift cable, but I don't know where the cable leads to from the shifter assembly. My mechanic mentioned that it leads to the steering column, but I can't find any diagrams or forums that will show me where exactly I need to find it, how to get to it, or how to replace it. I've mostly found answers to this problem only mentioning that the transmission in general is probably out of commission, but I can't afford a new car or to take it to the mechanic to find out. So, for now, I really only need answers on how to replace/fix the shift cable just in case that's all I need to do.

Hi,

The transmission won't cause this. Funny question. Does the gear indicator function correctly when in the selected gear? For example, if you place the transmission in neutral, does it show neutral?

If not, let's try adjusting the cable. Take a look through the directions below and let me know if you are comfortable performing them.

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe!

First off, thank you so much for getting back to me!

Here's a brief synopsis of my gear indicator: The indicator appeared to show what gear I was in when I first noticed the problem, the entire time I was tinkering with it and trying to figure out what was wrong, it would shift properly into every gear except Park. There was a brief moment where no matter what gear I was in, it would just go in reverse. However, when I jimmied it a little bit everything started working fine again. As of right now, it is hard to tell. Before, I was able to put the car into neutral and start my car, but that isn't working anymore. So, I suppose it is likely that it's not working at all anymore and I need to adjust the cable like you said.

Sorry if that was confusing, I'm not a mechanic so I figured I should be as detailed as possible.

As for these diagrams, I think the difficulty I'm having is with a lot of the vocabulary. I'm assuming by the context of the instructions that the gear eyelet on the "transmission shift lever" is referring to the connection between the cable and the shifter. But I am not sure what the propeller shaft is, or why I would have to raise the vehicle to get to that part, so I'm also assuming it's under the car.

Finally, when it comes to tightening the adjustment screw on the shift cable to 7Nm, I'm not sure how to do that accurately, but I'll do some research.

I will keep googling and YouTubing these questions, this has definitely brought me a lot closer to knowing what to do, so I appreciate your time.

Below are some diagrams and instructions that my mom sent me from her shop computer that I was also confused with. These might be more so for replacing the cable rather than adjusting it.

Again, thank you!
Gabrielle

Hi,

The eyelet you mentioned is where the linkage attaches. As far as 7 Nm, that is how tight to make the bolt. 7 Nm is equal to 61-inch pounds. You will use a torque wrench to perform this.

Does that help?
