After moving the shifter up and down a few times my truck will go into gear. I replaced the neutral safety switch but that’s not the problem.

Hi,

Have you checked the linkage at the transmission to see if it is properly attached?

I attached a few pics below. The first shows the cable and its mount. Make sure that it is secure. Pic 2 shows how the cable comes through the floor panel. It is clipped in place. Confirm that it is tight.

Also, with the parking brake engaged and the wheels blocked, have a helper shift through the gears to confirm the manual shift lever (what the cable attaches to on the transmission) is fully moving through the gears.

Try this and let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe

Hi,

Yes, it does appear to be moving normally. I did notice what appears to be a loose retainer where it connects to the range sensor shaft. Did you notice it?

Well, the next questions will seem very general, but I need to confirm. When you shift the gears, does the gear indicator in the vehicle change correctly? Also, is the transmission fluid clean and full?

If the fluid is full, and the shift indicator is accurate, it could be a line pressure issue. Is this transmission original with the 200K+ miles? Has the filter been replaced on a scheduled basis?

I need you to check something. I need to know which model transmission you have. There are three optional automatics used on this vehicle, a 4L60E, 6L50, or an Allison transmission. I attached a couple of pics below to help you locate the info I need.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe
