My car is showing service engine soon. So I put in a new battery and got an oil change, and a garage hooked it up to a machine. They said everything was fine an half an hour later the light came back on, so I took it to AutoZone. They said nothing came up too, and that the car was fine. So the message is still up there, so how can I get it off or reset it?

Welcome to 2CarPros.

If that light is on, then there is a diagnostic trouble code stored in the system. Is the vehicle running properly? Also, did either of the locations provide you with a diagnostic trouble code that was found.

Let me know.

The car is running perfectly, and both places said there are no codes coming up on the diagnostic test and that there’s nothing wrong with the car.

Welcome back:

Do me a favor. Take a picture of the light and upload it for me to see.

Also, I want you to try something that is going to sound stupid. However, give it a try.

Turn the key to the run position (engine off) and press the gas pedal to the floor 3 times within 5 seconds. Wait a few seconds and turn the key off. Start the car to see if the light is off.

Last, if the light is specific to a check engine and no codes are being found, it could be a software issue. Most commonly, a lower end scanner is unable to read specific types of codes stored. For example, most parts store scanners can read powertrain related codes. However, if there is an issue with a transmission, ABS, SRS and so on, they are unable to identify the issue.

Let me know.

So I tried the pedal thing and at first I thought it worked, but after about two minutes it came back on.

Welcome back:

What I need you to do at this point is have the computer scanned. Most nationally recognized parts stores will do it for free. By having that done, we will know if any diagnostic trouble codes are stored, what they are, and what we need to focus on for the repair.

Can you do me a favor. Check to see if there is a separate check engine light (not service vehicle). Also, if you could, try the reset one more time and the information button near the light may help point us, so check that too.

Let me know.
