When I’m driving on a freeway, at speeds of 55-60-65 my car’s front right side starts making a scraping noise that grows stronger as I accelerate, soon as I let up the noise slowly fades away. This could be a variety of things but I’m not sure which, if it’s something that I can avoid going to the mechanic’s and repair myself I’d be glad to know, or if it’s too much for a novice I’ll take it to the shop. But I just want a name for the part or what issue this could be that needs replacement or fixing? I’ve heard brake pads/shield might be the culprit, but I guess I’ll just have to ask those who know better.

This sounds like you are having a bearing issue but it is odd that it doesn't come in until higher speeds.

So let's start with getting a recording of the noise so that we can hear what it sounds like.

Here is a guide that will help with scraping noises in general but hearing the noise will really get us on the same page:

Let us know and we can go from there. Thanks

Hello, it turned out to be that my brakes were very well worn and needed replacing, and were the source of the scraping noise. Thank you for your advice though.

Got it. That is great info as normally worn brakes make the noise at slow speeds and get worse at higher speeds and may even go away at higher speeds. So it is good to know that this is not always true.

I am sure this info will help others that have a similar issue. Thanks for using 2CarPros. Please come back.
