2001 Saturn SL2 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

my car is making a very loud knocking noise. Could it be the pistons?

more likely the lifters.....these engines can burn oil. check the oil level first - if it is low.... top it off and run the engine for awhile and see if the noise goes away. -
