Do you have a multimeter?Check your coolant level it should be up to the seam of the coolant bottle. How high did the temp gauge read when it over heated? Was the cooling fan on when it over heated?

Yes I do have a multimeter. The temp gage went all the way up in to the red zone and yes the cooling fan was on. Any ideas?

Since the battery light is on then start the car and let it idle Then check to see what the voltage is at the battery cable's. Also have you checked the coolant level you could have a leak and be low on coolant causing the overheating.
