I have a 1995 Saturn SL1 146,000 miles. I accidentally let the oil get lower than it should less (just the tip of the dip stick showed oil-know better) I added oil it and it shakes a little and a little amount of noise when in idol? Did engine get damaged by low oil or does it just need a tune up? It has been over 50,000 miles since last tune up.

I am debating whether to get rid of this car, so far it has given me no problems and I like the car but mileage is high. Any thoughts?

Thanks

If it was touching the tip of the dipstick you were less then two quart's low you shouldn't have done any damage. If it's been over 50,000 mile's since your last tune up then you need a tune up there suppose to be done every 30,000 mile's. Just use the standard plugs don't use platnuim or split fire plug's they don't run right in your car. Also inspect the coil tower's for being corroded. Where is the noise your hearing coming from? Also Do you have any code's?

Thank you for your reply. No code. It is from the engine kind of like running rough I have heard it just before a tune up so it probably is that.

How long do you think this car will keep going? I do preventive maintenance and oil change every 3000 miles.

Thank you

If you have been taking good care of it with the oil change's every 3,000 miles then it should last a long time.I have seen a lot of saturn's go over 200,000 miles and some over 300,000 mile's. Your fuel filter get's changed every 30,000 mile's also they get pretty clogged by 30,000 mile's. And don't forget your transmission fluid get's changed every 66,000 mile's.
