have to pass gas all the way down to start and have to leave it there for a while to get it to stay on

Sound's like a bad coolant temp sensor i would try changing that there only 10.Also inspect the connector going to it if it's corroded replace the connector too.Make sure you get a brass tipped sensor the plastic tipped one's crack.
