2002 Saturn L200 Alternator

I believe its my Alternator thats going out, for about a month now my battery light comes on and off while driving. And we though it was just the battery but now we are thinking its the Alternator im just wondering if anything else could be wrong with it? And if im driving and the alternator goes out what could it do to the car?

First easy cheap steps, any Autozone, CarQuest, etc, can check an alternator to see if it is charging for FREE. (Generally when bearings go out on an alternator they make a very annoying high pitched whine.) They can also check to see if your battery is any good for free. Check that the battery cables are in good repair and tight. Check to see that the battery posts are clean and have a good connection to the ends on the battery cables.
