Electrical problem
2006 Saturn Ion 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

In the last few months on a rare occasion when I turned the key to shut it off and removed it, the engine stayed running. The problem would go away for weeks. One time I noticed the pwr steering warning light came on as this was going on and this happened again but only when I was having this problem. In the last three days this problem occurs almost every time I turn the ignition off. The pwr steering light has been on on occasion, but not always. Also in the last day I noticed the passenger air bag indicator light stayed on even when everything else seemed off. Another issue, for whatever reason on one of these times I put the car into reverse gear and got out and noticed the back up lights were lit even though everything else was supposedly off and the engine had stopped. The only way I can get the car to shut off now would be to stall it or turn the ignition a few times which not in all cases work, but somewhere there is power getting to something to keep the air bag passenger side indicator light lit at times which just started happening lately. What is weirdly going on. Ignition switch?

Sure sounds like a bad ignition switch, especially if at one time you could mess with it and get the car to shut off. The warning lamps and power to things with key off is another sign of a switch that is bad, if that switch is off, there shouldnt be any power to the dash
