when driving I set the cruise control it works for a while then shuts off. It will turn back on after driving for a while. Any ideas what it could be

Check to make sure the brake switch is adjusted properly. If you have a touchy brake light switch it may slightly turn on while driving down the bumpy road thus disabling the cruise.

What exactly is a brake switch or where would it be located

Its located under dash right above the brake pedal. When you press the pedal you will see the switch moving, there is a plunger that comes out when pedal is pressed.
