Question, happens a lot I know. The engine was knocking and she didn't check the oil. Got the oil changed and the mechanic said there was still oil but not much. She drove the mechanic to and from the shop, the engine still runs well, but there is the knock. (Very loud). I told her not to drive the car as it is probably ruined. Someone tolld me that it may not have enough lubricant to the pistons and recommended a procedure to help. Somthing about draining the oil out and putting something in, then draining that out and putting oil back in. Can you recommend something to be done to get the oil around the to see if this car is still driveable. We had just gotten it back from my oldest daughter who has driven it for many years. Youngest daughter is a new driver who ignored my orders to take it in for a oil change ASAP.

Try disablign the fuel and ignition system first then just crnak on it for a bit, see if that oils it up good.

Dependent on how bad the lack of oil was the engine could need some new bearings maybe honign of the cylinders, hard to say, do a compression test and get back to me.

Thanks for the reply, but I can't work on cars because I don't know how. I'm a working mom, etc. I don't have a mechanic in the area that I really trust. I thought I would try and find out as much as I could about the car's situation. I have tried to teach the kids about the importance of changing the oil and car maintenance as that is what I regularly do, but this youngest kid is an airhead about 50% of the time.

That seems to be how the younger generation was. I would not run it as is, because if a bearing or something is out, running it will only make it worse, hard to tell what it is without looking at it because running a car with little or no oil can cause damage to lots of things.
