i just had my engine rebuilt on my 1987 Saab. I noticed to day it was leaking anti freeze not more than 1/2 cup or less. I took it to mechanic and he said it needs heater valve. My question is. How much is this going to cost and could it be something else?

the leak was coming out of the left side fwd. Looks like under the dash.

You'll actually be lucky if a new part is even available. Replace the valve - it needs to seal hot coolant under pressure - other similar parts (water pump, cap) have likely been replaced TWICE before.
