Hi there. I have the car listed above (SI model) and I really need help. It runs pretty rough, it’s missing in one cylinder (first cylinder), back fires very bad at high RPM’s, and likes to just shuts off while sitting if I don’t keep the RPM’s up. However, I have changed the plugs, wires, distributor, rotor, and fuel injectors. I have done a compression test and everything held up good there. I also checked the timing with a timing light and it stayed in time but skipped time whenever load was applied (revving the engine in neutral). I have read some about these cars and am kind of leaning towards either the timing tensioner is loose or the belt itself and it’s skipping time. I figured i’d get a second opinion before I went ahead and bought the stuff because I don’t know too much about Honda’s. Anyone know what’s going on? Thank you!

Welcome to 2CarPros.

When the timing jumps while checking it with a timing light and hitting the throttle, that is normal. It automatically advances timing. Let me know if that is what you are seeing. Now, as far as the back fire, have you checked to see if there are any engine vacuum leaks? Also, have you checked fuel pressure?

Do me a favor. Take a look through this link and let me know if anything is helpful.

Next, here is a link that explains how to check for an engine vacuum leak:

Also, let me know what the compression is and confirm that I'm correct or not assuming it is the DOHC engine.

Take care,
Joe
