RTV for timing chain cover

I always get confused between the grey and black ones. What is a good way to remember which to use whenever dealing with cars

Permatex Ultra Black is made specifically for motor oil applications, and specifically for jobs like replacing oil pans, valve covers, etc. Etc. However on Toyotas the Permatex Ultra Grey is the equivalent to their FIPG used for the coolant systems. They also have a FIPG black for the oil application. Myself personally, I use Permatex Ultra Black.

The cover has grey on it so I will use that I guess. I myself like the black one. Thanks

I am ready to put some silicone on the cover. To avoid drama with leaks how long would you wait for it to dry on the cover and would it hurt if I wait longer just so I don't make a mess? The space is tight around the crankshaft pulley even with the engine upper and lower mounts off so I need to be careful. Once installed how long do I wait on the bolts hand tight before torquing them

You will want to install the cover immediately after applying the rtv. If you're using Permatex they say to hand tighten all bolts in sequence and then torque to spec after 1 hour. In my experience I have let the RTV sit a minimum of 2 hours with already torqued bolts and it was fine. If the customer has the time, waiting the 24hrs for setup wouldn't hurt.

So I can apply the coat on the cover and leave it 2 hours for example and then install and hand tight it in sequence and leave it abhor then torque it, would that work?

No you will need to apply the rtv and immediately install the cover. I would hand tighten in sequence and leave for an hour. Then torque to spec, let sit another hour.
