Rough idle from start up

Engine was running fine. Then an alert tone in cab sounded. Volt gauge stopped registering, engine began to idle rough. When driving engine has no power and the exhaust fumes have a terrible smell. What is really strange is when I depress the accelerator the digital odometer flashes. Will not exceed 1300 rpms at idle.
