Rims or wheels?

Do you refer to the entire metal part of the wheel assemblies on cars as rims or wheels? I always figured that rims was a colloquial (slang) form of the metal wheel part used interchangeably with wheels. I know several veteran mechanics who use the word rims as well. I understand what the dictionary definition of rim is (edge, outer part), just I always figured the word was just an auto industry's slang usage.

At the dealership we use rim as the steel or aluminum part and wheel as the entire rim and tire all mounted up together.

Thanks for the quick response. This is how I understood it. Sometimes I hear the words used interchangeably but I have no issues w/that. Some stranger online raged at me for using rims instead of wheel, and he said I'm not a car guy. I think the words can be interchangeable depending on the context.
