Stalling out other day it just died?

Hello,

I have a a 2001 Winnebago Rialta built on the 2001 engine, chassis, and drivetrain of the Volkswagen Eurovan.

I was driving the other day it just died. No warning or attempted stalling it just turned off.

Unfortunately this happened in the middle of an extremely busy intersection and I did not make many friends that day!

I sat in a turn lane and called AAA assuming I needed a tow. After about an hour of waiting for the tow truck. I tried starting the vehicle again and lo and behold it started back up much to my relief since I could now get it moving again. I called AAA and told them to put the service call on hold for now and I would let them know if I still needed the tow.

About 10 miles up the road it did the exact same thing but at least in a better spot where I could pull safely onto the shoulder. I thought I would wait to call AAA in case it was able to start again. I tried it again about 10 minutes later and it fired up again.

I started heading for home and it did it again but by now I realized just letting it sit for 10 minutes or so that it would start again. I texted a friend in the meantime who suggested removing the gas cap. I did and it started up and I got home safely, about 30 miles away.

I've left the gas cap off for a couple of days and it seemed to be ok. Over the weekend I put a brand new cap on it and changed the fuel filter to be on the safe side and headed out on a short road trip for my grandsons birthday. Everything was going great until it stalled again on a country road so at least I wasn't impeding traffic.

It started again 15 minutes later and did it once again about 10 more miles down the road.

I decided to take off the gas cap again even though I wasn't sure if this was a good idea or not but once it was off I got to my destination ok.

The next day I drove home with the cap still off and made it the entire 85 miles with no stalls.

I had codes checked at the local O'Reilly's and there were 3 codes.

P0740
P0725
P0441

The P0441 seemed to be the culprit but I haven't been able to find any info that it could actually cause the vehicle to stall and then recover awhile later.

Also twice on the journey there was a clunk sound that may have been from the transmission. It didn't affect me continuing to drive.

My apologies for the long question but you did say to be specific and give details! Ha!

If you could point me in the right direction on how to proceed it would be most helpful. While not a mechanic I have done some rudimentary repairs on my vehicles such as the fuel filter over the years and I'm hoping this might be a DIY situation to avoid an expensive trip to the dealer.

Thanks again!

Rick

So two of the codes can make the engine stall, but the first code you will notices a jerking like a standard transmission car coming to a stop without putting the clutch in, so to me it sounds like the P0725 code is the issue.

P0740 - Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Circuit Malfunction
P0725 - Engine Speed Input Circuit
P0441 - EVAP Incorrect Purge Flow

I would replace the engine speed sensor (crankshaft position sensor). Here is the location, the P0441 code could have been because the gas cap was off. I would clear the codes once the repairs have been made. Check out the images (below). Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the quick reply, Ken! I appreciate your additional insights and pointing out the engine speed sensor issue.

Thank you for sending the illustration as well. Hopefully, I will be able to locate it on the engine without too much difficulty.

Would you happen to know the correct replacement part brand/number?

Thanks for that info! When checking online the OEM part is extremely expensive.

I did a search on Amazon and came up with this. It seems to be the right part number, but it doesn’t mention my euro van in the description.

Is this still the correct part?

Ken, my apologies for not posting earlier. I was out of the country for a couple of weeks and just now getting back into the swing of things.

I ordered the part the CPS and it seemed to have solved the problem at first. But I did have a shut down again the other day and the only code I’m pulling now is the P0441 which is only the EVAP system which I think wouldn’t cause an outright turning off of the engine.

So I do believe we were on the right track either way with the CPS, but I still would like to narrow down what’s going on with the P0441. I bought a new gas cap and put it on and it seemed to be OK for a couple of days, but the check engine light is back on and it’s still throwing the same code.

No problem, :) lets start a new thread for the P0441 code so we can address it separately.

This is a follow up to a previous thread where I replaced the CPS and it seemed to have solved the problem for awhile.

I have now had a complete shutdown once again while driving. If I let it sit for about 15 minutes it restarts and I can continue.

The only code I'm getting now is the P0441. I've replaced the gas cap and reset the code but it returns a couple of days later.

Any insight is most appreciated!

Sorry about the confusion. Just ask a question for the P0441 code. When you mean "complete shutdown" do you mean the electrical went out as well?

I'm sorry for the confusion Ken.

No, I meant the engine just shut down suddenly without warning. The electric is ok and I could try to restart it but it wouldn't start until I let it sit about 15 minutes or so. I had driven it about 60 miles to Orlando to do a photography session and it was fine on the way down, thank goodness this time!

It stopped about 10 miles into the journey back home. Made it home just fine with no issues the last 50 miles and checked the codes and got the P0441 code. When I'm on the road there are no symptoms of any problems. Drives fine, accelerates and shifts as it should. I do drive with the A/C on since I'm in Florida and it's still quite warm here.

It just doesn't make sense what's going on.

Did you replace the crankshaft sensor? Also, when it wont start I would unplug the MAF sensor, when these short out it will shut the engine off, so just unplug it and see if anything changes.

Yes, I replaced the crankshaft sensor as you suggested.

I'll try unplugging the MAF sensor. I assume you mean "I would" rather that "I won't". Would you happen to know where it is located?

I also assume you meant unplugging it when the engine has shut off and I'm on the side of the road stuck again? It did it again after about 50 miles or so with the A/C on.

I'm determined to this darn thing figured out!

Yes, unplug the MAF sensor when the engine stalls to see if it wills tart back up again, if so replace the sensor. I marked where the sensor is, check out the images (below). Let us know how it goes
