I go to start my car and it automatically rev's to 3,500 RPM's and does not idle down. If I put it in gear then it still idles high and sporadically.

The first place to start would be to get the powertrain control module scanned for continuous and on demand codes. The issue could be anything from a pedal position sensor, throttle position sensor, or a powertrain control module issue.

I figured I would have to take it in. How common is this?

I personally have only had one that ended up needing a throttle body, but in other parts of the country there could be different issues.

Problem solved! I was able to do a hard reset on my PCM by unhooking the neutral from the battery for 30+ minutes. I also allowed the system to set up for a minute before I cranked the engine over.

Awesome! If it acts up again, do not shut off the vehicle before getting it scanned for codes. For some reason Ford has a large threshold before setting throttle body codes.
