How can I retire my car

I took it to have it smoged they had me drive it for a while and then bring it back and when I brought it back they went to test it and then told me it wasn't registering on there machine. So then had me drive it some more and then bring it back again and still did the same thing! They told me I need to have it fixed and then bring it back and then they'll try it again. I paid for my tags already and she's an old car and I can't afford to keep up fixing her! I need help please

Did they give any more detail about what was happening when they hooked the car up? Just not sure what they were looking at when they said it wasn't registering. I am familiar with smog testing but that is a bit too general. I assume they are connecting to the OBD test port and if they are not getting communication on that then that would make sense with what they are saying. If this is the case then we are going to need to dig into the electrical side of things. However, if they were doing something else then we will need to go that route.

Did they provide a printout as to what the issue was?

Are you in California. If you are, a failed smog report from a shop is enough to retire the vehicle. Where are you going that they are making you drive around so much?
