Replaced recently, but suddenly aware of metal to metal with groves in rotor on only one of four replaced?

I had my rear brakes replaced in November of 2021. I took my car to Midas for different repairs and was told that I needed my brakes replaced. I said "wow I just had those done" anyway I went ahead and ordered front and rear rotors and pads online (Midas prices were too much) and had them replaced. When I picked my car up, I read on my invoice I only needed the front brakes replaced, but they went ahead and did all four. When I asked if they would give the old parts back, I was told, only if I ask ahead. This was in April this year. 3 days ago, I noticed a loud grinding sound. My husband looked and told me the back driver's had grooves worn in the rotor. Why would I not have noticed prior to getting to the rotor having groves, why only the driver's side rear brake and would Midas be responsible for any of this? Thank you, Jamie Burnett

Hi Jamie, the left rear caliper may be hanging up and cause the pads to wear faster than they should. Do me a favor, lift the left rear wheel off the ground and see if it turns smoothly or if there is a drag on it. Also, when turning it by hand, you should be able to hear the noise.

Additionally, if it does need rear pads again, I can explain how to do it yourself. Here is a link that shows in general how it is done. It isn't as difficult as one would think. However, we will need to know if the caliper is hanging up to determine what to do to avoid the problem happening again.

Also, if you do it yourself, you can get lifetime brake pads, and that way you don't have to pay for them again.

Let me know.

Joe

Thank you for your time and help. It helps me to not go to a mechanic blind. After reading some of the questions from others, I also have the traction control engaging sound going on. Not when I brake, but just driving slowly on a dirt road, or first starting out in drive, there is an occasional clunk sound. It seems lately to be more often. Any ideas?

Hi,

You are very welcome. If you plan to take it to a shop, let me know what they tell you prior to authorizing repairs. At least I can tell you if it makes sense.

As far as the occasional clunk, can you tell approx where it is coming from? For example, does it seem to be in the rear or front of the vehicle? Also, the ABS issue is interesting. Does it actually engage? If so, that would likely be a failing wheel speed sensor and could be related to the wheel that has the brake problem.

Here is a link that explains how to test one. However, I'm adding it because it also explains how it works.

Let me know if that helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Thanks again for your time and help. I have an appointment tomorrow morning to have my brake fixed. It's a place where I've got good service and a good price. However, I will let you know what the outcome is, I truly appreciate your offer to let me know if the issues found sound right. I've had quite a bit of work done at different places and can honestly say Mechanic's aren't what they used to be. Too bad you don't live in Alaska! Thanks again, I'll be getting back to you soon.
