I want to replace the valve cover gasket on the vehicle listed above and I would like the step by step procedures including the torque values and exploded view diagram. Also, what seems to be the best replacement gasket set others always use?

I also want to replace the serpentine belt and spark plugs since the serpentine belt became oil soaked and the plugs are due to be changed. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

If you look at the attachments below, the first ones are for the removal and replacement of the valve cover gasket. Now, if I recall correctly, from the factory, they came with a gasket maker and not an actual gasket. If you are able to get a gasket, go with something like a Fel-Pro.

As far as the spark plugs, there are no specific directions in the manual. However, once you remove the coil pack, you will need a socket and extension to reach down into the spark plug tube to remove it. It's straightforward. If you run into trouble, let me know. Also, pic 10 below provides the gap specifications for the plugs. Here is a video showing how it is done:

Last is the serpentine belt. The last pic below shows the directions for the removal and replacement of the belt.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Thanks Joe,

This should be exactly what I need. I ordered a Fel-Pro gasket already. Have you ever used that liquid gasket that the manual says to use? I want to use it since I am a firm believer in using what the manufacturer calls for. I love using Toyota FIPG on Toyotas. I want to use the Honda liquid gasket here on the TSX. Any particular insight you can comment on about those liquid gasket application areas since I haven't removed anything yet to see what is under there?

Hi,

I have used it with success. When you use it, make sure to follow the directions. If I recall, it will tell you to apply it and then finger tighten the bolts. After a given amount of time, you will then torque it tight.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe,

Thank you very much for your help. I completed the valve cover gasket and plugs replacement. I used the Honda liquid gasket bought from the dealer for about $38. I used the Fel-Pro kit and iridium NGK plugs. I wanted to post a few pictures to allow others to see what this repair is like. I used the hard plastic ring from the old spark plug tube seals to help press the new seals in from the Fel-Pro kit. I did it slowly and carefully so as not to damage the new seals for the spark plug tubes. Furthermore, I spent a lot of time making sure the valve cover channel and the head surface were very clean. In the picture I show a piece of wood, but I also used a rag to protect the new seal when installing. Once again, thank you very much!

Hi Joe,

No leaks after two days of observation/daily driving. Much of the leaks originally were from the small seals on top of the valve cover, but the actual gasket was brittle as well. It all needed replacing. Dry as a bone and clean now. I impressed myself!
Thanks

You did a nice job. Based on the pics, I'm not surprised there are no leaks.

Regardless, take care, and please feel free to come back anytime. By the way, I just noted your heading. Many years ago, I had a 66 with the 389 tri-power. Didn't keep it too long because I was young and felt I would end up seriously hurt. LOL

Take care,

Joe
