Hi everyone, I have the car listed above Turbo Diesel. I had to car in to diagnose a check engine light, could not find an issue and the tech reset it.

While there, he noticed oil leaking from the turbo. Says I should replace it. They don't do the work, wanted me to take it to a diesel specialist. Anyway, I can get an OEM replacement for $1,600.00, complete kit with gaskets and new bolts, etc.

Never done it, but it is accessible, and does not look too hard. Anyone ever done this, or have instructions on how?

I love this car and want it to last.

Thanks,
Tim

Hi,

I attached the directions from my manual to remove and replace the turbocharger on this vehicle. It doesn't look too difficult but it will take some time.

The flat rate time is 3 hours, so it should be doable at home. Take a look through the directions and let me know if you are comfortable performing them or if you have questions.

Let me know if this helps.

Take care,

joe

Hi Joe, thanks again for the procedure. I will receive my replacement turbo charger tomorrow and plan to install it this weekend. The replacement is from FCP Euro: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/mercedes-turbocharger-upgrade-kit-garrett-6420901200. It includes some startup lubrication: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/pro-line-turbocharger-additive-liqui-moly-lm22074

Will it be obvious where to add that? For instance, and inlet or outlet for lubricating oil?

Thanks,
Tim

Hi,

The turbo is lubricated via the engine oil when running. Is that what you mean? Also, I clicked on the link you sent and keep getting an error. See pic below.

Let me know.

Joe

Hi Joe, sorry about the links. Not sure why they did not work. If you go to fcpeuro. Com and search for: "Mercedes Turbocharger Upgrade Kit - Garrett 6420901200" you will see the replacement kit for the Turbo. I also tried putting "Mercedes Turbocharger Upgrade Kit - Garrett 6420901200" into an internet search bar, and the 4th hit was the FCP Euro link for the part.

The last item on the list is "Turbo Charger Additive", a tube of Liquid Moly lubricant. I saw a Youtube video on replacing a MB turbocharger, and the lubricant is added from the top after it is installed, but the camera angle was from the front and you could not see where.

I assume the lubricant is for first time startup only before normal lubrication takes over.

Thanks again.

Hi,

Yes, on the first-time start-up, you need to pre-lube the turbo to make sure the bearing is lubricated. It will take some time to get oil to it and running it without a lubricant will take time off its life. Actually, they say five seconds unlubricated is equal to about five minutes of running the engine with no oil

Normally, this is done via the oil feed port on the turbo. You would add the manufacturer's recommend lubricant via the feed a spin the turbo several times by hand. How much is added will be determined by the manufacturer.

I attached a pic below to help you locate the oil feed tubing.

Let me know if this helps.

Take care,

Joe

Thanks for the information, Joe. The turbo installation went smoothly; your information was very helpful. Have to hand it to FCP Euro too, their kit was quite useful, the gaskets had clips to hold them in place while the setting the turbo in place. Made reassembly much easier. Glad I took it on myself, saved a couple thousand bucks.

Best,
Tim

Tim,

Excellent! Thanks for the update. I'm glad to know you got it done. Also, I couldn't agree more. If a company (in this case FCP) provides good directions and parts, it makes things a lot easier.

Regardless, take care of yourself, and feel free to come back anytime in the future.

Joe
